What Is POE 1 Keepers of the Flame?

Path of Exile: Poe 1 Keepers of the Flame is the 3.27 expansion for Path of Exile 1, developed and published by Grinding Gear Games (GGG). It serves as a direct sequel to the beloved Breach league, one of PoE’s most iconic mechanics, now completely overhauled with new art, encounters, bosses, and rewards.

In the story, the Breachlords have stabilised their interdimensional connection to Wraeclast, fusing their forces into monstrous creatures called the Hiveborn. As an exile, you must fight alongside Ailith, founder of the Order of the Keepers of the Flame, wielding the Flames of the Dreamer to halt the invasion.

This expansion introduced:

  • A full Breach mechanic rework with new encounter types
  • The brand-new Genesis Tree system
  • Bloodline Ascendancy Classes — 10 additional secondary ascendancies
  • Asynchronous trading (borrowed from PoE 2’s success)
  • Grafts — otherworldly items fused directly to your character
  • Three new Uber Incarnation boss fights
  • Over a dozen quality-of-life improvements
  • 40 new challenges with exclusive cosmetic rewards

New League Mechanics Explained

New League Mechanics Explained

1. The Reworked Breach

The original Breach mechanic is completely replaced during Keepers of the Flame. Three new types of Hiveborn encounters exist:

  1. Hive Infestations — Breach monsters form unusual structures in areas. Protect Ailith as she channels the Flame to purge them. Survive long enough and she destroys the hive with cleansing fire.
  2. Unstable Breaches — A massive Breach Hand sunders dimensional space. Touching it triggers an Unstable Breach, flooding the area with Hiveborn. Kill them fast enough to stabilise the rift.
  3. Hive Fortresses (Maps) — Venture inside fortresses and defend Ailith against waves of Hiveborn, or defeat former Breachlords inside Hive Colonies.

The original Breach is inaccessible during Keepers league. Breach splinters, Breach rings, Vaal Breach, and related mechanics are disabled or converted.

2. The Genesis Tree

Found in the Monastery of the Keepers, the Genesis Tree is the heart of the expansion’s endgame progression. Use it to grow:

The Genesis Tree
  • Currency items (Chaos Orbs, Divine Orbs, and more)
  • Unique items including Foulborn Uniques — powerful league-exclusive items
  • Equipment with special modifiers
  • Grafts — a new category of otherworldly items that literally fuse to your character, granting breach-themed powers

The Genesis Tree also acts as an entirely new Atlas Tree, offering a fresh endgame loop separate from the standard Atlas Passive Tree.

3. Bloodline Ascendancy Classes

Bloodline Ascendancy Classes

One of the most revolutionary systems introduced in 3.27. After defeating specific endgame bosses, you absorb their power in the form of a secondary Bloodline Ascendancy. There are 10 Bloodline classes in total, each tied to a past league boss (including Trialmaster, Ashabi, and the King in the Mists).

Key rules:

  • No class restriction — any Bloodline Ascendancy can be taken on any character class
  • These are in addition to your normal Labyrinth Ascendancy, not a replacement
  • They open up entirely new build combinations and synergies previously impossible in PoE

4. Asynchronous Trading

Borrowed directly from Path of Exile 2, asynchronous trading is now live in PoE 1 from Act 6 onward. Faustus manages your trade requests, including a currency Exchange. Place items into new Merchant tabs for instant purchase by other players — even while you are offline.

5. Quality-of-Life Improvements (12+ Changes)

  • Heist Rogues now start at maximum level for all proficient jobs
  • Both the Atlas Passive Tree and the regular Passive Skill Tree can be fully refunded instantly using Gold
  • Level up all gems with a single click
  • Identify all inventory items at once — no Scrolls of Wisdom required
  • Six new Ring base types added (Cryonic, Enthalpic, Formless, Fugitive, Organic, Synaptic rings)
  • Opening a Blight chest now cascades and opens nearby Blight chests automatically

Build Details

1. Tornado Shot / Kinetic Rain (S Tier League Starter)

  • Why it works: Kinetic Rain is one of the newly introduced gems that delivers screen-wide projectile coverage. The Deadeye ascendancy provides Tailwind for mobility and additional arrow mechanics, making it the smoothest transition from campaign through red maps.
  • Recommended for: Players who enjoy ranged, fast-paced gameplay with versatile endgame scaling.
  • Budget: Under 5 Divine Orbs to cap out early gear.

2. Righteous Fire Chieftain (Durable AoE Powerhouse)

  • Why it works: The Chieftain has overtaken the Inquisitor as the premier Righteous Fire ascendancy in 3.27. GGG reworked RF damage to scale heavily off HP and energy shield. The Chieftain’s Hinekora’s Death Fury notables cause enemies to explode on kill, dealing 500% of their max life as fire damage, creating chain reaction clear.
  • Recommended for: Players who want a tanky, relaxed clear experience with strong boss presence.

3. Earthshatter Berserker (Boss Rush Champion)

  • Why it works: With Foulborn Ghostwrithe as a key upgrade, this build delivers one of the strongest all-round starts in the game. Excellent for boss-rush content, Harvest, and loot box farming. Starts fast and requires minimal investment.
  • Recommended for: Melee players who want to crush bosses from day one.

4. Elementalist Cold DoT (Budget SSF Pick)

  • Why it works: Combining Wintertide Brand and Cold Snap, this build deals consistent high DoT with almost no investment. Elementalist provides free exposure, golem bonuses, and proliferation for screen-wide clear. Ideal for SSF or players without trade access on day one.
  • Recommended for: New players, SSF, and currency-efficient league starters.

  2. Use an Orb of Transmutation — Create a Magic flask.
  3. Equip all gear slots — Fill armor, weapons, rings, amulet, and belt.
  4. Defeat Merveil — Complete the Act 1 boss.
  5. Apply a Graft — Right-click a Graft onto gear. Obtained early in Act 1.

  9. Complete Labyrinths — Normal through Eternal.
  10. Reach Maps — Transition from campaign to Atlas.

Category 2 — Atlas & Mid-Game (Challenges 11–25)

The majority of challenges fall in this bucket — approximately 28 of the 40 total challenges are Atlas-based.

Key challenges include:
