Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. It is built around a deep item-based economy, deep character customisation, competitive PvP, and ladder races. The game is entirely free and will never feature a “pay-to-win” model.

Skill Gem System

Action RPGs have always been about two things: crushing skills and sweet loot. In Path of Exile, these core elements are innovatively combined. To explain, skills are a kind of item — gems that give you abilities when socketed into your equipment.

Additionally, numerous support gems are available to modify the behavior of these skills. For example, you can tailor your Fireball to chain from target to target, or split into multiple fireballs.

A skill can have up to five support gems active at some point. The gems are independent levels, and some are rarer than others, allowing them to be competitively traded amongst players.

Passive Skill Tree

Path of Exile features a unique class archetype system, where all character classes share the same vast passive skill tree. Beginning from one of seven unique origins dictated by your choice of class, players can enjoy the game through the classic specializations or explore their own path on hybrid combinations that make it possible to effectively use two or more branches of combat skills at once.

There are also Keystone passives spread throughout the tree, which change gameplay entirely for a character. Resolute Technique not only prevents you from being able to crit, but also allows enemies to evade your attacks.

Necromantic Aegis will apply the stats of your shield onto minions, instead of yourself. You can Craft Jewels yourself that change the tree itself, such as adding new custom properties or affecting the effects of adjacent passive skills.

The World of Wraeclast

Wraeclast is a grim and savage land. Twisted by mysterious disaster, fallen from its former glory, and driven into savagery by creatures of nightmare, the wasteland is dangerous to those who are exiled to it.

Seriously, we’re so over the bright, colorful cartoony RPG thing. The art style we chose for Path of Exile was dark, dirty, and realistic. Wraeclast is a scary place, and we’ve worked really hard to honour that.

Path of Exile is all about replayability. All of the world — both outdoors, underground, and in various above-ground structures like temples — is an instance space for your party and is procedurally generated, down to the magical properties of monsters spread out across it, as well as every piece of treasure filling the maps.


Item System

Path of Exile is primarily about items. Any game systems that can be itemised have been. Our flasks are forever items with mods. The Elder and Shaper-influenced areas appear as Map items and have their own modifiers for challenges and rewards.

Leagues and Events

One of the things that’s most fun about playing a competitive online Action RPG is taking part in a levelling race on a fresh server. In Path of Exile, we wanted to capture this feeling without constantly resetting our main economy, so we’ve created a set of race leagues that are run frequently as separate game worlds with their own ladders and economies.

In addition to regular races, leagues can substantially modify the game rules. In an Ancestral league, ancient totems exist alongside groups of monsters, augmenting their abilities. In Turbo leagues, monsters move and attack 60% faster than normal.
